Former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar, who was serving a life sentence in connection with the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, has died at the age of 80. Kumar’s health deteriorated while he was lodged in Tihar Jail, following which he was taken to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. He faced serious allegations of involvement in violence and killings in Delhi’s Raj Nagar and Palam areas during the 1984 riots. After a trial court acquitted him in 2013, the Delhi High Court overturned the verdict in 2018, convicting him of murderand criminal conspiracy and sentencing him to life imprisonment. In February 2025, Kumar was also sentenced to life imprisonment in anothermurder case, while in January 2026, he was acquitted in a separate case due to lack of evidence.
1984 के सिख विरोधी दंगों के मामले में उम्रकैद की सजा काट रहे कांग्रेस के पूर्व सांसद सज्जन कुमार का 80 वर्ष की उम्र में निधन हो गया। तिहाड़ जेल में स्वास्थ्य बिगड़ने के बाद उन्हें दिल्ली के सफदरजंग अस्पताल ले जाया गया, जहां डॉक्टरों ने मृत घोषित कर दिया। 1984 के दंगों के दौरान दिल्ली के राज नगर और पालम इलाके में हिंसा और हत्याओं के मामले में सज्जन कुमार पर गंभीर आरोप लगे थे। 2013 में निचली अदालत से बरी होने के बाद 2018 में दिल्ली हाईकोर्ट ने फैसला पलटते हुए उन्हें हत्या और आपराधिक साजिश का दोषी ठहराया और उम्रकैद की सजा सुनाई। फरवरी 2025 में उन्हें एक अन्य हत्या मामले में भी उम्रकैद मिली, जबकि जनवरी 2026 में एक मामले में वे बरी हुए। उनके निधन के साथ 1984 दंगों से जुड़ी न्यायिक लड़ाई का एक बड़ा अध्याय खत्म हो गया।
